L-ART/05 - PERFORMING ARTS

Period

1 A, 1 B

Learning objectives

The course aims to present the theories and to provide the tools for the study of the relationship between performing arts and media, that is to say the technologies used to construct, fix, transmit, enjoy and comment one single performance or more and all its various components from the antiquity to the digital age. At the end of the course the students will be able to understand the many possible interactions between media and performing arts; analyse the cultural, social, and ideological aspects underneath them; compose on their own short written papers on a piece of performance; acquire the ability to improve their knowledge in time.

Prerequisites and basic notions

General knowledge of the specific characteristics of theatrical language (dramaturgy and staging) and its evolution over time.

Program

The course focuses on the relationship between theatre and cinema. The theme will be addressed both from a historical point of view (the cinema of the origins and its relationship with theatre and live performances; evolution of acting in the transition from theatre to cinema; cinematographic transpositions of theatrical texts) and from an aesthetical point of view (comparing theatrical and filmic language on the basis of the categories of space and time).
Attending students will prepare the exam on the lecture notes and on the following texts:
Marina Pellanda, "Cinema e teatro", Carocci 2013;
Roberto De Gaetano, "Teatro e cinema", In Luigi Allegri (a cura di), "Il teatro e le arti", Carocci 2017, pp. 153-168;
André Bazin, "Teatro e cinema", in André Bazin, "Che cosa è il cinema?", Garzanti 1973, pp. 142-190.
