Methodologies for an evidence-based professional practice (2022/2023)
The teaching is organized as follows:
Learning objectives
MODULO EPIDEMIOLOGIA CLINICA E SPERIMENTALE: The course aims to introduce the principles of quantitative research in the biomedical field, providing knowledge and skills in epidemiological and biostatistical methodology to assess the frequency of diseases in human populations and their risk factors; recognize the observational/experimental study design best suited to a specific scientific question; understand and be able to apply inferential reasoning to different biomedical research contexts.
MODULO Application of technologies for genomic and image analysis of oncological material: The aim of the course is providing the student with knowledge on analysis methods to determine and classify the clinical impact of driver genetic alterations in different types of cancer samples by massively parallel sequencing, and their varification/validation by image analysis of tissue slides stained by immunohistochemistry, immune fluorescence, or in situ hybridization.
Prerequisites and basic notions
The knowledge of descriptive statistics and probability achieved in the 1st year of the degree course is an essential prerequisite for the Clinical and Experimental Epidemiology Module. During the lessons some key concepts will be revised, in particular the calculation of probabilities from a two-way table, conditional probabilities, and the concept of statistical independence.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The final mark, expressed out of 30, will be calculated as the arithmetic mean of the marks obtained in the exams relating to the two modules.
