Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will need to demonstrate to have acquired the main interdisciplinary foundations of Romance Philology (historical linguistics, textual criticism and medieval Romance literature).
Program
The first part of the course is intended to be an introduction to the principles of the discipline, with an overview about the history of Romance philology, an outline of historical linguistics and textual criticism.
Lectures will afterwards deal with medieval Romance epic ('chansons de geste'): origins and features of the genre; reading, translation and comment of quite a number of excerpts from the 'Chanson de Roland' and the 'Cantar de mio Cid'.
