Academic calendar
The academic calendar shows the deadlines and scheduled events that are relevant to students, teaching and technical-administrative staff of the University. Public holidays and University closures are also indicated. The academic year normally begins on 1 October each year and ends on 30 September of the following year.

Learning outcomes
The course aims at introducing the students to the most important periods and trends of German 19th Century literature: Classic and Romantic literature, “Vormärz”, “Biedermeier”, Realism.
At the end of the course students are required to possess a thourough knowledege of the topics we dealt with, with regard to both the literature-historic aspects as well as the works in German; moreover they are required to be capable of analysing and understanding these texts and to explainf the knowledge acquired in proper German speech.
Program
The course consists of one single module (taught class); after a short introduction in Italian the course will be held in German.
The course programme includes some of the canonical texts of German 19th Century literature, such as: Wolfgang Goethe, Faust I and II (selected passages); Kleist, Die Marquise von O (full text reading), Ludwig Tieck, Der Runenberg (full text reading), Wilhelm Hauff, Das kalte Herz; Friedrich La Motte-Fouché, Undine; Heinrich Heine, Deutschland. Ein Wintermärchen (full text reading), Heinrich Heine, selected poems; Georg Büchner: Lenz (full text reading); Woyzek; Dantons Tod; Franz Grillparzer, Der arme Spielmann (full text reading); Adalbert Stifter, Kalkstein (from: Bunte Steine) (full text reading); Theodor Fontane, Effi Briest (selected passages).

Part of the texts will be handed out as photocopies. Further teaching material will be available on the e-learning platform related to the class.
Non-attending students are requested to agree with the docent upon part of the literature-history programme and to focus the second part of the programme on the study of works representative of the 19th Century literature, by reading one of the following texts at their choice: Annette von Droste-Hülshoff: Die Judenbuche; Theodor Storm, Der Schimmelreiter; Gottfried Keller: Romeo und Julia auf dem Dorfe, Fontane, Effi Briest.

Examination Methods
The final exam will be oral and held in German. The oral exam will be on the whole programme and it will consist in a conversation aimed at testing:
- the depth and the wideness of the acquired knowledges
- the ability to analyse and understand the literary texts in the programme
- the argumentative ability and the ability to link knowledges in a historical-cultural and critical-literary reflection
- the ability to convey the related topics in German.
The final mark will be in 30ths.
