Learning outcomes

Understanding of the linguistic, historical-political and identity specificities of the realities of the Syrian-Anatolian region in the Iron Age (1st millennium BCE).

Program

During the Iron Age, the Syro-Anatolian region was composed of several cosmopolitan kingdoms,
each with their own political identity, distinct from their neighbors. The period is also one with a
particularly diverse sociolinguistic landscape, bearing evidence of several multilingual communities
and certain apparently inclusive linguistic policies. Different languages and scripts were chosen by
various rulers for use in specific contexts as one means of defining and expressing their political
identity to their contemporaries. In this seminar, we will examine a selection of inscribed
monuments in order to understand the processes of identity formation and expression utilized by
various rulers and communicated to their subjects. The choices made by these rulers will be
examined comparatively to highlight shared practices, as well as innovations distinct to particular
rulers.

Examination Methods

Submission of a short essay (ca. 2 pages) that will summarize the contents of the seminar. The essay will be graded by the teacher (Nathan Lovejoy) or by the referent (Federico Giusfredi).

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE
