Academic calendar
The academic calendar shows the deadlines and scheduled events that are relevant to students, teaching and technical-administrative staff of the University. Public holidays and University closures are also indicated. The academic year normally begins on 1 October each year and ends on 30 September of the following year.

Learning objectives
The main educational goal of this course, which is part of the degree course in Foreign Languages and Literatures, is the acquisition by students of advanced skills in Spanish Literature from the origins to the 17th century. As a result students will acquire: - knowledge and comprehension skills: in-depth knowledge of the Spanish Literature of the period planned in terms of historical context, texts, genres, movements and authors, with particular regard to the themes of intercultural exchanges and the expressive differentiation of Literary phenomena. - Applied knowledge and comprehension skills: students will acquire the necessary methodologies to work on literary texts in both historical and comparative perspective, as well as the ability to understand complex texts and implicit meanings. Students must be able to express themselves in Spanish fluently and spontaneously, arguing clearly, structured and detailed on complex topics.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Students must have passed the exams of “Spanish Literature 1” and “Spanish Language 1” in order to take the examination.
In this respect, it should be noted that the certifications issued by the CLA are valid for three years.
Program
The course is divided into two parts:
FIRST PART:
The pre-Renaissance: age of the Reyes Católicos, the Celestina; the empire of Charles V; Erasmism; Philip II and the Counter-Reformation; the expulsions of Jews and Moros and Moriscos; Garcilaso de la Vega; Juan de la Cruz; the novel, the picaresque and the Lazarillo de Tormes; the poetry of Francisco de Quevedo and Luis de Góngora (notes).
SECOND PART: reading, analysis and commentary of some parts of Don Quijote de la Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes.

Didactic methods
The course is structured in frontal lessons.
The teacher is available during office hours for additions and clarifications on the course contents.
Attending students: the course will consist of lectures with active participation by students. The lessons will be held in Spanish. The course materials will be uploaded to the Moodle platform of the course with a progressive number corresponding to the course module. If there is a need to make up missed lessons, it is advisable to contact the teacher, who will provide support materials.
Non-attending students: they must contact the teacher during office hours to agree on the study materials. Teaching support methods: the supplementary and support teaching materials will be uploaded to the Moodle platform of the course. Potential interested parties are also informed that a specific support and tutoring activity for inclusion and accessibility is available, in particular for the courses of Language and Literature in the French, English, Russian, Spanish and German areas. The activities will take place from November 2024 to June 2025 and will be advertised on the Department page.
Learning assessment procedures
The exam will be an oral discussion in Spanish. A final oral exam will assess:
- a deep knowledge of primary and secondary texts;
- the capacity to read and interpret the literary texts analyzed;
- the capacity to articulate effectively the information and critical assessments concerning texts and topics discussed in class;
- the capacity to express and critically argue in Spanish;
* ERASMUS students are asked to contact with the teacher at the beginning of the course to agree together on the exam methods.
Attending students will take a self-assessment test (verifica in itinere) during the course. The grade given will be part of the final grade. The self- assessment test will be done only once (in December).
Students who pass the written exam will have to prepare, for the oral examination, only the second part, which consists on the reading and commenting of Don Quijote.
In order to take the oral exam, students need to have already passed both Lingua spagnola 1 (Spanish Language 1) and Letteratura spagnola 1 (Spanish Literature 1). All students are allowed to take part on the self-assessment test (prova in itinere).
The syllabus is the same for non-attending students. Students who cannot attend the lessons are kindly invited to get in touch with the professor.
Evaluation criteria
The assessment of learning outcomes is aimed at verifying:
1) knowledge of the history of Spanish literature of the of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries;
2) the understanding of the primary texts in the syllabus, within their historical and cultural context;
3) the acquisition of a critical methodology appropriate to the analysis of texts and contexts;
4) the ability of textual analysis as well as expository and argumentative analysis in Spanish.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The final mark will result from the average of the grades assigned according to the four criteria described above.

Contamination Lab
The Contamination Lab Verona (CLab Verona) is an experiential course with modules on innovation and enterprise culture that offers the opportunity to work in teams with students from all areas to solve challenges set by companies and organisations. Upon completion of a CLab, students will be entitled to receive 6 CFU D (type credit).

PLEASE NOTE: In order to be admitted to any teaching activities, including those of your choice, you must be enrolled in the academic year in which the activities in question are offered. Students who are about to graduate in the March-April sessions are therefore advised NOT to undertake extracurricular activities in the new academic year in which they are not enrolled, as these graduation sessions are valid for students enrolled in the previous academic year. Therefore, students who undertake an activity in an academic year in which they are not enrolled will not be granted CFU credits.
