The teaching is organized as follows:
Learning objectives
The teaching module aims to give the students the theoretical and practical knowledge necessary:
A. To understand the vital functions of the healthy human being, to understand the basics of how the different organs and systems function, their regulatory mechanisms, and the main processes of homeostatic integration and control.
B. To understand the processes of cell functioning that are common to all living beings, and in particular the basic mechanisms that regulate metabolic activity, reproduction and cellular interactions and the mechanisms of transmission of genetic diseases in humans with particular attention to gender differences.
The purpose of this teaching module is to provide the student with knowledge and understandings of:
- Patterns of genetic transmission, expression of hereditary traits and the complex interactions between genome and environment.
- Biological and hereditary phenomena in genetics, mechanisms of functioning in organs and psychological, environmental and social features.
- Gender-related influences on health when evaluating biological, environmental or social variables.
- The functions of the human organism in its different levels of organization and the ways in which the different functions are integrated and regulated.

There are no prerequisites.

Learning assessment procedures
To pass the exam the students need to prove they understand and can apply in an integrated way both the pathogenic mechanisms and the risk factors responsible for the primary health issues.
The student also has to be able to explain how hereditary traits transmit and express at the level of the individual and of the population, and the complex interactions between genome and environment as well as the determinants of such interaction.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The final mark will derive from the average of the marks obtained in the individual modules.
