INTERNAL MEDICINE MODULE
The aim of the present course is to provide the participants with a clinical diagnostic capacity on the basis of the recognition of signs and symptoms presented by the patient.
The students should demonstrate to already possess established notions of physiopathology of a broad range of diseases involving all organ systems, and to be able to use them in the interpretation of the patient’ clinical picture.
The students should therefore to infer the main pathogenetic processes, starting from the knowledge of the molecular bases and leading to the most frequent clinical situations and syndromes. The students must demonstrate the requisite skills in physical examination, being able to recognize the main signs characterizing the different diseases. Moreover they have to synthesize and prioritize effectively the problems of the patient, hypothesizing a diagnostic management plan with the support of biochemical and instrumental data, as well as bearing in mind the need of an objective confirmation in the differential diagnostic process.
Classroom lectures will be focused on the analysis of paradigmatic and emblematic clinical cases, on whose basis will be developed and discussed the diagnostic rationale, the differential diagnosis, the topics of systematic study of diseases in order to define the clinical picture, explain its severity, urgency and clinical relevance. Finally, will be discussed and motivated the diagnostic procedures that are necessary to lead to a definitive diagnosis and formulation of a prognosis.
Specific emphasis and attention will be devoted to technological developments that can or will improve the diagnostic and clinical management of individual patients.
MEDICAL GENETICS MODULE
The main objective of the course is to delve into various aspects of medical genetics, which encompass the clinical evaluation of patients, genetic counseling, including prenatal, postnatal, and oncological counseling, and innovative therapies.
The students will acquire knowledge that will enable them to approach clinical cases, understand the principles governing the transmission of genetic diseases, and interpret genetic tests for use in genetic counseling. They will be capable of recognizing major genetic diseases, including complex syndromes, and interpreting experimental results using the latest technologies.
PROBLEM SOLVING AND DECISION MAKING TUTORIALS
Decision Making Tutorials are aimed to fifth year students of “Medicine and Surgery” School. The students are divided into 12 groups. In total, each group deals with 4 clinical problems related to internal medicine area.
Problem Solving Tutorials are aimed to fifth year students of “Medicine and Surgery” School. The students are divided into 12 groups. In total, each group deals with 4 clinical problems related to internal medicine and pharmacology area.
INTERNSHIP IN INTERNAL MEDICINE (DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS)
The educational objective of the internship is to provide the student with clinical skills in the process of differential diagnosis of the main diseases of internal medicine interest
Examination Methods
INTERNAL MEDICINE MODULE Oral examination MEDICAL GENETICS MODULE The examination will consist of a written test, which will include: a) Open-ended questions or multiple-choice questions to assess knowledge of the discipline. b) Exercises to evaluate the ability to apply the acquired knowledge.
Evaluation criteria
The oral examination is aimed at evaluating the clinical-diagnostic knowledge and skills of the candidate and, above all, his/her ability to integrate them in a complete and critical path of differential diagnosis. The grade of the oral exam is given by the overall assessment of the test, which is considered positive by score equal to or greater than 18/30. MEDICAL GENETICS MODULE The examination assesses knowledge, language proficiency, the ability to interpret results, and problem-solving skills. The test grade is given by evaluating the answers and execution of the exercises and is considered positive for scores equal to or greater than 18/30. The final grade will be represented by the weighted average over the number of CFUs of the grades given to the different exams.
