Learning outcomes
The course focuses on the study of the main international organizations, including the United Nations (UN), the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The course is built along three lines of legal contention which are currently at the heart of legal discussions in these international legal bodies, namely: the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the prohibition of non-refoulement and mass indiscriminate bombing.
Classes will benefit from the participation of Dott. Ben-Nun, research fellow at Global & European Studies Institute, University of Leipzig, with research and consulting experience at UNOPS-UNDP (Bureau for Crisis Prevention & Recovery: War-Torn Societies Project; multiple field missions) and UNIDIR (Peace and Conflict Studies United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research).
Program
The course will focus on general issues relevant to both intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations as well as on the study of the following key contemporary issues of international legal contention: the Palestinian-Israeli conflict as he case laboratory of modern international law; refugees & non-refoulement; mass indiscriminate bombing & the 4th Geneva Convention.
The course consists primarily of seminars and group work. Attending students are involved in the study of legal cases and the discussion of the issues raised, on the basis of the assigned reading. Final assessment is based on class attendance and participation as well as a written final paper.
