Program

The ways of the desert. The course is dedicated to the study of the archaeological and textual documentation relating to the Arabian Peninsula, with particular reference to the first millennium BC and to the relations with the Assyrian, Babylonian and Achaemenid empires. The documentation is analyzed in the broad context of communication and trade routes between the regions of the peninsula, the adjacent ones and long-distance traffic. Other areas are considered for comparison.

Didactic methods

The course is divided into lectures that make up the most consistent part of the time and are integrated by lectures in seminar and laboratory form. The reference texts indicated for the module are general manuals, of which the parts to be studied will be specified during the course. They will also be integrated during the course with the presentation of sources and the discussion of some examples of secondary literature; summaries of the topics covered will be uploaded to the e-learning platform of the course for easier framing of the topics and periods covered in the lessons and manuals.

Learning assessment procedures

Final oral assessment. The purposes of the assessment are to verify the acquired knowledge; language skills; the ability of textual analysis.
The assessment will consist of questions on the topics treated during the course, the bibliography indicated during the lessons, the documents studied, and the synthesis provided in the slides.
Not attending students and Erasmus students are kindly requested to contact the teacher at the beginning of the course in order to agree on the programme and assessment modalities.

Evaluation criteria

The evaluation concerns: the acquisition of the specific skills and topics covered by the course, the ability to organize and apply the acquired knowledge and methodologies, correctness and expository properties.
