Learning outcomes
The course aims to introduce students to the issues and methods concerning the study of opera as the most prominent manifestation of western music theatre of the last four centuries.
Program
Foundations of musical dramaturgy: Monteverdi and the beginnings of opera. This course aims to introduce students to the study of opera. The first part will focus on the theory of musical dramaturgy. The second will concentrate on the works of Monteverdi, especially "L’Orfeo" and "L’incoronazione di Poppea", which will function as case studies on which we will try out recent methodological approaches and learn the most useful analytical tools.

Examination Methods
Written text: three questions to be answered in 1h and 30m. Thew first question will be on opera in general (first part of the course); the other two: one on "Orfeo" and one on "L'incoronazione di Poppea" (second part of the course).
