Program

Freedom, contract, equality: modern contractarianism and feminist critique.
The course aims at an in-depth analysis of modern contractarianism, especially in Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, in order to highlight the limits, amnesias, exclusion strategies that are implicit in the social contract. The feminist perspective will put into question the supposed neutrality and universality of the contractarian anthropological model. According to Pateman's reading of the social contract, it is a brotherhood contract, based on the invisibility of female subjectivity and her subordination within the new, modern patriarchal order, which is no longer despotical but fraternal.
