Semester 1  dal Oct 2, 2017 al Jan 20, 2018.

Learning outcomes

The aim of this course is to present the most important literary and cultural tendencies of the 19th Century within the German-speaking literature.
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
- read and understand literary works in their original version;
- comment precisely themes and motifs from a critical and historical point of view;
- interpret in German the themes or texts, which will be analyzed during the course.

During this seminar (frontal lesson) students will learn about the most important theoretical as well as literary principles of the German speaking literature of the 19th century. Aim of the course is also the analysis of the basic aesthetic categories of this period, such as the concepts of "Progressive Universalpoesie", “Sehnsucht”, “Fantasie”, “Romantisierung” and “romantische Ironie”. Besides, students will examine the Romantic Age also in contrast with the main features of the literature of the Weimarer Klassik. Furthermore, the course will investigate both literary movements "Vormärz" and "Realismus" and will focus on the aesthetic revolution of the "Gesamtkunstwerk" too.
Program of study:
- Friedrich Schlegel: "Das 116. Athenäums-Fragment" (Progressive Universalpoesie) [1798] (whole text);
- Novalis (Friedrich von Hardenberg): Excerpts from "Heinrich von Ofterdingen" [1802] and "Hymnen an die Nacht" [1800];
- Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué: "Undine" [1811] (whole text);
- E.T.A. Hoffmann: Excerpts from "Fantasiestücke in Callot’s Manier" [1814-15], especially from the cycle "Kreisleriana";
- Joseph von Eichendorff: "Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts" [1826] (whole text), selected poems;
- Heinrich Heine: Excerpts from "Die romantische Schule" [1833], selected poems;
- Georg Büchner: "Lenz" [1835] (whole text), excerpts from "Dantons Tod" [1835];
- Richard Wagner: Excerpts from "Die Kunst und die Revolution" [1849] and "Das Kunstwerk der Zukunft" [1850];
- Eduard Mörike: "Mozart auf der Reise nach Prag" [1856] (whole text);
- Theodor Fontane: Excerpts from "Effi Briest" [1894].

Those students who cannot attend the lectures must deepen their knowledges about a historical-literary theme, which is to agree with the professor. Besides, they have to read two extra literary works, which can be chosen among following texts: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe: Die Wahlverwandtschaften [1809]; Ludwig Tieck: Der gestiefelte Kater [1797], Franz Sternbalds Wanderungen [1798]; E.T.A. Hoffmann: Der Sandmann [1815]; Georg Büchner: Woyzeck [1837]; Annette von Droste-Hülshoff: Die Judenbuche [1842]; Eduard Mörike: Maler Nolten [1832]; Gottfried Keller: Romeo und Julia auf dem Dorfe [1856], Kleider machen Leute [1874]; Gerhart Hauptmann: Die Weber [1892].
