Learning outcomes

The course aims at introducing and consolidate the metalinguistic knowledge of lexical semantics, textual cohesion, discourse coherence, collocations and their semantic/pragmatic context, and English syntax. On completion of this course, students will have developed a solid understanding of lexical relationships of meaning and how they create cohesion in English texts; they will also be able to identify syntactic constituency and the relation between syntactic form and function.

Examination Methods

Prerequisites for the access to the final exam:
English Language 1;
English C1 level;
English Literature 1.

The final exam (June/July 2018, September 2018, February 2019) is a written test with exercises, for a total of 30 points, referred to topics of the syllabus as for example:
sense relations: synonyms, hyponyms, meronyms, antonyms, other forms of opposites;
homonymy, polysemy, homographs, homophones
collocations and their context;
cohesion and discourse coherence: repetition, anaphora, cataphora, references, substitution, ellipsis, conjunctions, Lexical/grammatical word classes;
phrase and clauses structures:
head, constituents and their visual representation;
sentences (Simple and Complex)
form and function relationships.
