Learning objectives

To acquire knowledge about: - authors, works, texts and cultural or literary contexts; some texts among the most important for the national literary identity; - resources needed to comprehend and interpretate texts; - the theme of the relationship between writing and landscape. To acquire competences in: - reading poetry, also in an intertextual view. At the end of the course students will be able to put the texts known in the adequate cultural context, and to analyze them focusing on the main formal aspects, main themes and the dynamic relationship that connects these two levels.

Prerequisites and basic notions

A good knowledge of the Italian language and literature is required.

Program

The 19th-century novel: I promessi sposi by Alessandro Manzoni.
The course aims to provide basic knowledge of the theory and history of the modern novel, with particular attention to the 19th-century Italian novel, examining its forms and characteristics. In addition, the course includes reading, analyzing and studying a reference text in the history of the modern Italian novel of the 19th century, I promessi sposi by Alessandro Manzoni, discussing a particular field of research: the symbolism of spaces and objects of the threshold in the narrative plot.

Didactic methods

Frontal lessons. Reading exercises and in-depth study of the work. Seminar lessons to be held in the classroom are offered to interested students: the goal is to have them actively participate during the course, through the presentation and analysis of a chapter of the novel of their choice, agreed upon with the teacher.

NB: The reception takes place on Fridays from 12 to 13, in the office of professors Danelon-Salvadè - room 2.06 of the Department of Cultures and Civilizations (Polo Zanotto, second floor) - or on Zoom. It is possible to make an appointment on days and at times other than those indicated. In any case, students are invited to agree on the reception by writing to sabrina.caiola@univr.it

Learning assessment procedures

Oral exam on the course program.
Three questions are expected to verify the preparation obtained in the three points into which the program is divided: 1. Verification of knowledge regarding the theory, history, form and characteristics of the modern novel genre; 2. Verification of understanding and analysis skills of the text under examination; 3. Verification of the ability of interpretation and personal reflection starting from the topics covered.

Evaluation criteria

Knowledge and mastery of the topics covered during the lessons and of the bibliography provided are verified. In particular, the ability to understand and critically analyze the novel covered in the course and the ability to place it in a relevant historical-cultural-literary context are assessed; therefore, the ability to reflect and make the information acquired dialogue with each other is examined, also through the critical bibliography of reference. The expressive and argumentative ability is also assessed.
The evaluation is expressed in thirtieths.
