Learning objectives

The course aims to present the diachronic development of Chinese literature from its origins to the eighteenth century, through the description of the historical-cultural system and the analysis of genres, authors and major works. At the end of the course, students will have a thorough knowledge of the topics covered during lessons and of the relevant critical discourses, and will be able to describe independently and with critical competence the ancient and premodern literary history.

Prerequisites and basic notions

There are no prerequisites for attending classes.
To take the exam, you must have passed Chinese Language 1 and Chinese Literature and Culture 1.

Program

The course presents the general outlines of the development of ancient and pre-modern Chinese culture, with particular reference to its philosophical and literary heritage. It proposes the reading in translation and analysis of a selection of the most important and significant works of prose, poetry, fiction and drama in the Chinese literary canon. The reading of primary sources will be accompanied by a presentation of the historical context and an in-depth study of some of the main features of traditional Chinese society and culture, which are also fundamental to an understanding of contemporary China, such as family and gender relations, socio-political institutions, value systems and religions.

Didactic methods

Lectures with the support of Power Point presentations. Lessons slides are part of the study materials and will be available for download on the Moodle platform.
Class contents and study materials are the same for students who do not attend classes. Those students are invited to contact the instructor during office hours.
Other teaching materials will be uploaded in the Moodle platform of the course.

Learning assessment procedures

The examination will consist of a written test with multiple-choice questions and open questions.
Questions focus on the content presented during the course, the online materials available on the Moodle platform and the texts listed in the bibliography.
Duration: 120 minutes

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The examination aims at determining the acquisition of the historical-literary knowledge required, the analysis of the readings in the syllabus and the ability to argue and analyse critically on the basis of the skills acquired during the course.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

Grades are measured in thirtieths. The exam is passed with a score of 18/30 or higher.
