Learning objectives

The course aims at introducing the students to the most important periods and trends of German 19th Century literature: Romantic literature, “Vormärz”, “Biedermeier”, Realism, Naturalism. At the end of the course students are required to possess a thourough knowledege of the topics we dealt with, with regard to both the literature-historic aspects as well as the works in German; moreover they are required to be capable of analyzing and understanding these texts and to explain the knowledge acquired in proper German speech.

Prerequisites and basic notions

The following prerequisites are required to attend the course: - B1 level of German - the fundamental principles of textual analysis - basic knowledge of the history of 19th century European culture

Program

Starting from Goethe, the theme of the relationship between Classicism and Romanticism will be addressed in the first part of the course (calling into question Schiller on the one hand and Kleist and Byron on the other). Then we will examine the phase of the Junges Deutschland and the Vormärz (with authors such as Heinrich Heine and Georg Büchner) - as opposed to the so-called Biedermeyer (represented by Franz Grillparzer and Adalbert Stifter). Finally, some leading figures of Realism such as Conrad Ferdinand Meyer and Theodor Fontane will be analyzed.

Didactic methods

The main teaching method is the frontal lesson.
Attendance is strongly recommended.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam will be oral, will be held in German, and will cover the entire course program.

Evaluation criteria

The interview will aim to verify: - the ability to analyze the literary texts in the program - the ability to contextualize the texts in a historical-cultural and critical-literary reflection - the ability to deal with the contents in German

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade is expressed in thirtieths.
