Learning outcomes

The teaching will provide several conceptual, methodological and cultural basis necessary to analyze and interpret some of the most characteristic phenomena of 19th century Russian society and culture, linked to the specific national religiosity and expressed in literature. In addition, it tends to develop the autonomy of student’s judgment and its ability to use some methodologies of comparing texts, not just literary.

Program

The stranničestvo in Russian literature and culture of the 19th century.

Many artists and writers, like Dostoevskij, Tolstoj or Leskov, had been fascinated by the idea of stranničestvo. The course will offer the following content:
- an explanation of the historical and spiritual phenomenon of strangeness;
- the phenomenon of stranničestvo in Russian and Western philosophical interpretation;
- The figure of the strannik in the so-called The Pilgrim’s Tale, written by Arsenij Troepol’skij and in the Raw Youth of Fiodor Dostoevskij;

Examination Methods
