Learning outcomes

Il corso di inglese scientifico mira a raggiungere i seguenti obiettivi: 1. introdurre i vocaboli principali dell’inglese scientifico; 2. sviluppare le quattro abilità (speaking, listening, reading, writing) della lingua inglese con particolare attenzione alla abilità di lettura; 3. tramite l'analisi di brani autentici scientifici, rinforzare e consolidare la grammatica e i vocaboli della lingua inglese; 4 4. migliorare le competenze traduttive dall’inglese all’italiano Il corso di Inglese scientifico presuppone che gli studenti posseggano già una conoscenza intermedia della lingua inglese.

Program

The course plans to develop the students' competences in relation to grammatical structures, vocabulary and functional language relevant to professional practices.

Specifically, the focus is on the following topics:

1) The field of English for Medical Purposes and its characteristics
2) Healthcare personnel, National Health Systems, the Hospital and their interactions
3) Anatomy and Physiology of the Human Body and its composition. Main human body systems analysis
4) Infectious Diseases, Prevention and Epidemiology
5) Screening and Medical Imaging
6) Symptoms and Signs, Diagnosis, Pain and Therapies
7) Scientific Research and Presentations: Structure and Organisation of a Scientific Paper - Its purpose and language features
8) Practice on Main medical Vocabulary and Scientific texts Analysis

Examination Methods

Students' abilities assessment will be measured through a written exam aimed at verifying the knowledge of all the didactic module.

The exam will be structured in different parts:

1) Scientific and Medical Text Comprehension and Analysis (Multiple Choice questions)
2) Appropriate translation of Medical Terminology
3) Use of medical terminology in different fields (sentence completion exercise)
4) General English Language Knowledge Test (Grammar Exercises - sentence completion and transformation)
