Learning outcomes

The course aims to make students able to: describe and interpret the informations about a set of data; know and interpret the main measures of frequency and association in the epidemiological field.

Program

MEDICAL STATISTICS
• Collection and presentation of data: measurement, types of variables and measurement scales; sensitivity and specificity of a measurement procedure; one-way and two-way tables; absolute and relative frequencies; cumulative frequencies.
• Measure of position: mode, median, quantiles, reference range, arithmetic and weighted mean.
• Measures of spread: range, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, interquartile range.

EPIDEMIOLOGY
• Introduction to epidemiology: definition of epidemiology; outcome, occurrence parameter, determinant.
• Measure of occurrence: incidence, cumulative incidence, prevalence.
• Measure of association: attributable risk, relative risk, odds ratio; confounding and effect modifiers.
• Diagnostic and screening tests: sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value of a screening test.
• Design of Health studies: introduction to cross sectional studies, cohort studies, case-control studies, clinical trial
