Learning outcomes

This class provides theoretical foundations and fundamental concepts for the knowledge of phonetics and phonology.
Knowledges:
- Anatomical and physiological notions of the phono-articulatory apparatus that allow the production of voice
- phonetics and phonology elements
- “IPA” International Phonetic Alphabet
- elements of phoniatric anamnesis and main diagnostic tools of phono-articulatory apparatus’ main pathologies
- linguistic competence in formal and functional aspects
- stages of the typical evolution of language and factors stimulating correct development
- prelinguistic indexes of phonological and lexical development
- Specific language disorder (DL)

Skills:
- ability to perform a phonetic transcription of words and phrases
- recognition, evaluation, differential diagnosis and intervention in developmental phonological disorders
- know how to choose methods and tools in order to make a neuropsychological evaluation
- be able to inform and propose prevention interventions of language disorders
- administration of the PFLI Test (Tests for the phonological evaluation of child language)

This class will cover following topics:
- Overview of anatomy and physiology of the phono-articulatory apparatus
- Elements of phonetics and phonology
- IPA International Phonetic Alphabet and principles of phonetic transcription
- Elements of phoniatric anamnesis and main diagnostic tools of phono-articulatory apparatus’ main pathologies
- Linguistic competence: formal and functional aspects
- Stages of the typical evolution of language and factors that stimulate correct development
- Preliminary indices of phonological and lexical development
- The language disorder (DL)
- Phonological disorder: evaluation, differential diagnosis and intervention
- Neuropsychological evaluation
- PFLI Test (Tests for the phonological evaluation of child language)
- Phonological disorder: evaluation, differential diagnosis and outline of intervention
- Elements of prevention of language difficulties

Teaching methods
Classroom meetings include frontal classes with slides in support of the topics covered, practical exercises on phonetic transcriptions, recognition of phonological processes, discussions on clinical cases, group work.

Examination Methods

The test aims to verify achievement of training objectives indicated for the class.
Written test with some open questions.
Students can do an additional oral examination as needed.
