Learning outcomes
Illustrate the properties of sounds, the psychophysical acoustics, the functioning of the hearing apparatus and the causes that determine hearing disorders in childhood, adulthood and geriatrics and the correlation between hearing loss and communication. AUDIOLOGY MODULE Training objectives: The course aims to provide students with the basic notions on the functioning of the auditory system and on the causes that cause hearing disorders in childhood, adulthood and geriatric age, with particular attention to the correlation between hearing loss and communication. At the end of the module, the student knows the causes and the repercussions of these pathologies on the acoustic-verbal communication function. 12 ACOUSTIC PHYSICAL MODULE Training objectives: The module aims to introduce some physical concepts characteristic of acoustics. It focuses, therefore, on the definition and properties of sounds, both in the time domain, in the frequency domain and on their propagation in free field and in closed environments. The psychophysical acoustics are also studied in depth: the concept of acoustic sensation is developed and the effects of noise on humans are clarified. Furthermore, the physics of the ear is introduced, through the description of those physical phenomena that bind to the physiology of the ear. A reference is made to the physics of phonation. Finally, the concept of auditory bionics is introduced and the main bionic aids and their sound processing mechanisms are described. GENERAL LOGOPEDIA MODULE Training objectives: 1. Historical outline with respect to the history of speech therapy in Italy and in Europe: birth and evolution 2. Code of ethics in professional action and in relations with other professionals 3. Description of the professional profile and the fields of speech therapy 4. Description of the roles and competences of the other rehabilitation professions and other health figures 5. Role of the speech therapist in the field of prevention, habilitation, rehabilitation, education, education, monitoring and counseling 6. Definition of the evaluation concept and the tools necessary to do it 7. Definition of communicative-linguistic profile and speech therapy balance; description of how a speech therapy intervention is structured 8. Definition and theories of verbal and non-verbal communication SEMEIOTIC MODULE OF COMMUNICATION AND LANGUAGE Educational objectives: At the end of the course the student is able to describe the general aspects of communication and human language. In particular it has the bases to illustrate the physiology of vocal production, describing the functioning of the phono-articulatory organs, how auditory perception occurs and how the CNS intervenes in this process.

Introduction of the concepts of sound pressure, sound intensity and sound power. Identification of links between sound intensity and power and between pressure and sound power. Introduction of the concept of sound density. DEFINITION OF SOUND LEVELS. Logarithms and their properties. Definition of loudness. THE SPREAD OF SOUND: 1- IN FREE FIELD The presence of obstacles: introduction of the concepts of reflection, refraction and diffraction. Resonance definition. The outdoor sound propagation. Attenuation phenomena of sound level. Effects of directivity of the source. Description of the Doppler effect. 2. INDOOR Reverberation definition ACOUSTIC BAND ANALYSIS ACOUSTIC PSYCHOPHYSICS: definition of loudness. Introduction of the physiological effects produced by noise. EAR PHYSICS: introduction of concepts of physics and electronics on the pinna, the external ear canal, the middle ear and the inner ear. Definition of action potentials, with their properties. PHYSICS OF SPEECH: description of a sounding board. Introduction of Bernoulli effect. BIONIC HEARING: definition. Description of the main bionic subsidies and of their sound processing mechanisms for middle and inner ear. Hearing aids. Implantable hearing aids. Cochlear implants. Auditory brainstem implants.

Syllabus The following concepts will be discussed: ➢ Linguistic and communicative competence ➢Communication: definition, parameters and degrees of sophistication, the communication channel definition ➢Verbal and nonverbal communication, proxemics, the haptic, the suprasegmental traits. ➢Anatomical and physiological basis of speech and language: ° Input mechanisms: the parameters of auditory perception, the acoustic optimization process. ° CNS and cortical areas of language. The hemispheric dominance, brain plasticity, the critical periods. ° Output mechanisms: the phono-articulatory organs.
