Learning objectives

The purpose of Odontostomatology I consists in providing the students a well-integrated knowledge about the following units: Restorative dentistry-Orthodontics-Periodontology-Prosthodontics. The different units concern specific principles but they are strongly connected in expressing and consequently accomplishing the patient’s treatment plan. PRACTICAL ACTIVITY IN CONSERVATIVE DENTISTRY MODULE To be able to employ dental instruments and to restore dental cavities. To be able to perform aesthetic and non aesthetic restorations with up-to-date knowledge and materials. PRACTICAL ACTIVITY IN ORTHODONTICS MODULE The student will be able to: identify the different malocclusions; use the materials to take the impressions for study casts; take impressions for the study casts; take intra and extra oral photographs for case documentation; know orthodontic instruments; know the principles of realization of a direct and indirect bonding. PRACTICAL ACTIVITY IN PERIODONTOLOGY MODULE The student will be able to prepare the surgical operating field; to adopt the basic individual protection measures; to prepare the operating room for non-surgical therapy . PRACTICAL ACTIVITY IN DENTAL PROSTHESIS Practical training in prosthodontics Learning objectives. The course includes, among its objectives, the instrumental-radiographic diagnostic evaluation, the acquisition of the ability to detect intraoral impressions in the various pathological indications and the use of the facial bow and articulators. The student is provided with the knowledge of impression detection techniques in fixed prosthesis and the total sequence of realization, from the impression to the article, finished in removable prosthesis. The student will be able to acquire prosthetic techniques through practical exercises using teeth mounted on dummy and assisted tests on patients. CONSERVATIVE DENTISTRY MODULE The course aims to provide the anatomic, etiopathogenetic and instrumental knowledge to diagnose and to implement prevention protocols. Establishing restorative (morphological, aesthetic and functional) protocols for treatment of tooth’s hard tissues, with respect for health of periodontal tissues and masticatory function is also required. ORTHODONTICS MODULE Recognize and distinguish eugnatic and dysgnatic clinical cases; diagnose and classify, acquiring knowledge on the relative therapeutic implications, both in the growing subject and in the adult, thus recognizing the most complex cases in orthodontics PERIODONTOLOGY MODULE To acquire the diagnosis ability in order to accomplish a proper treatment plan according to the specific type of the periodontal disease which is presented. Biological knowledge concerning the oral ecosystem and its pathological variations is necessary. Moreover, the student will be able to implement an appropriate treatment plan supported by the specific radiographic imaging and through proper diagnostic instruments; during the periodontology traineeship, the previous contents will be supplemented by the observation and learning of non-surgical causal therapy’s instruments, and by the observation of bone and mucogingival surgical procedures. DENTAL PROSTHESIS MODULE Learning objectives. The prosthesis module provides for the acquisition by the student of the guidelines concerning fixed and mobile prosthetic rehabilitation. Particular attention is paid to medical anamnesis, examination of the stomatognathic apparatus and analysis of the temporomandibular joint, as pivotal points of reference of the clinical approach in rehabilitation function concerning the prosthetic field. The student will have the opportunity to learn about the necessary instruments for the prosthetic abutment preparation techniques and for the impression taking in fixed prosthesis. Knowledge about the anatomy of the edentulous oral cavity in the different degrees of bone atrophy, and the consequent clinical sequences for the realization of partial or total mobile prostheses will be provided.
