Academic calendar
The academic calendar shows the deadlines and scheduled events that are relevant to students, teaching and technical-administrative staff of the University. Public holidays and University closures are also indicated. The academic year normally begins on 1 October each year and ends on 30 September of the following year.

Learning objectives
The main purpose of the course is to develop the student’s ability of reasoning on significant topics in the frame of European Private Law. In order to properly deal with these issues, an analysis of continuities and discontinuities in the historical progression of these matters will be necessary. This analysis shall move backwards from the last significant developments of European Private Law to the roots of the ideas stemming from Roman legal system.
Moreover, the student is expected to: understand and reconstruct the basic outlines of several figures emerging from Rome’s historical experience; recognise the Roman principles still existing in current legal experiences, both in Civil and Common Law; develop analysis and connection skills, also from an historical-comparative perspective; expound the results of his/her critical evaluation in a coherent manner and with appropriate language proficiency; deal with concrete cases and propose legally correct solutions.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Roman Law Institution is the preparatory exam for this course.
Program
Roman law is a fundamental historical phenomenon also for the understanding of current legal experiences. As such, the teaching of Foundations of European Private Law aims to deepen the characteristics of some Roman Law institutions, belonging to different areas of private law, which constitute the roots of as many figures of current law, both in Civil and Common Law systems.
The lectures will focus on the exposition of some fundamental principles of European Private Law, with particular regard to the formation of the European Legal Tradition in contractual matters. The course will be characterized also of intensive lectures and seminars organised into thematic modules in the field of obligations, rights in rem, and succession.
The didactic material uploaded on the e-learning platform will be available to students.
ERASMUS students are kindly requested to contact the Professor at the beginning of the course, in order to agree the exam’s program.

Didactic methods
The course combines 30 hours of direct lecturing (supported by the use of PowerPoint presentations) with 6 hours of Workshop teaching dedicated to exercising students according to the Problem Based Solving (PBS) method.
All the lectures involve the active participation of the students.
Alongside the traditional frontal modality, the lessons aim to stimulate the legal reasoning capacity of students, through their active participation, especially by soliciting the analysis and discussion of the legal issues submitted to them.
Any conferences and / or seminars of particular interest for the topics covered will be reported from time to time by the teacher during the lessons.
Learning assessment procedures
The examination will take place in oral form, preceded by a written test with the submission of three open questions to be answered in the total maximum time of forty-five minutes.
For ERASMUS students the exam will consist on a written paper, in Italian or English, on the part of the programme agreed in advance between the student and the teacher.
Evaluation criteria
The exam’s goal is to test the program knowledge, having regard to the student’s ability to develop a critical reasoning on specific legal issues.
The evaluation criteria are as follow:
- acquisition of knowledge;
- acquisition of critical reasoning skills;
- acquisition of analytical capacity and arguing ability.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The final evaluation is expressed in thirtieths (30/30). The evaluation between 18 and 20 corresponds to a sufficient, yet low and basic, knowledge of the contents; the evaluation between 20 and 25 shows a more than sufficient/discreet knowledge of the contents; the evaluation between 25 and 29 shows a good or very good knowledge of the contents together with commendable critical skills. The evaluation between 30 and 30 cum laude corresponds to a very good or excellent knowledge together with high critical, analytical and connection skills.
Exam language
Italiano Gli studenti ERASMUS potranno scegliere se sostenere la prova in italiano o in inglese, previo accordo con il Docente.
Type D and Type F activities
Le attività che consentono l’acquisizione dei crediti riservati alle attività formative a libera scelta dello studente (TAF D) sono le seguenti:
• Un insegnamento previsto nell’elenco delle attività formative (TAF D) allegato al piano didattico del corso di laurea Magistrale in Giurisprudenza;
• Un insegnamento attivato nei Corsi di studi afferenti al Collegio di Giurisprudenza;
• Un laboratorio didattico attivato nei Corsi di studi afferenti al Collegio di Giurisprudenza;
• Un laboratorio didattico attivato nei Corsi di studi afferenti al Dipartimento di Scienze Giuridiche;
• Un insegnamento previsto dall’Offerta Formativa di Ateneo, non impartito nell’ambito dei corsi di studi afferenti al Collegio di Giurisprudenza: il riconoscimento dei crediti acquisiti sarà subordinato alla preventiva presentazione di coerenti programmi formativi valutati dalla Commissione istruttoria per la didattica e approvati dal Collegio didattico.
• Attività formative organizzate dai singoli docenti del Collegio di Giurisprudenza o del Dipartimento di Scienze Giuridiche: previa approvazione del Collegio ad esse verrà attribuito, dopo un’apposita verifica, un credito per ogni 6 ore di frequenza obbligatoria;
• Attività formative che implicano la partecipazione a convegni o seminari organizzati sotto il “logo” del Dipartimento di Scienze Giuridiche o dell’Ateneo: devono essere preventivamente approvate dal Collegio di Giurisprudenza indicando un docente di riferimento del Collegio di Giurisprudenza ovvero del Dipartimento di Scienze Giuridiche. Un credito per ogni giornata di convegno o di seminario si acquisisce dopo apposita verifica che dimostri l’avvenuta fruizione culturale del tema del convegno o del seminario.
Le attività che consentono l’acquisizione dei crediti riservati alle ulteriori attività formative (TAF F) sono le seguenti:
• Informatica (3 cfu)
• Stage;
• Un laboratorio didattico attivato nei Corsi di studi afferenti al Collegio di Giurisprudenza;
• Un laboratorio didattico attivato nei Corsi di studi afferenti al Dipartimento di Scienze Giuridiche.

Internships are aimed at enabling students to gain direct knowledge of the world of work and to acquire specific professional skills.
Internships are carried out under the responsibility of an individual lecturer, and can be carried out in professional firms, public administration bodies and companies recognised by the University of Verona.
Any CFU credits gained by doing internships will be recognised and recorded by the University in accordance with the relevant University regulations in force (Regolamento d’Ateneo per il riconoscimento dei crediti maturati negli stage universitari).
