Learning outcomes
Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide the knowledge of the main events of Italian and European history in the years between the Great War and the collapse of communism. It is focused on European political, cultural and social history, which is analyzed in a comparative and transnational perspective. At the end of the course the student must be able to: a) identify the periodizations connected to the different historical periods, b) know the most important events of the different periods connected both to the European contest and to the single national cases; c) to orient oneself among the most important political cultures, the economic processes and the social transformations that mark the historical phases considered, d) to use in a critical way the different historiographic interpretations.

Syllabus
The first lesson will be devoted to framing the main methodological questions concerning the study of the twentieth century. Subsequently the course will touch the following topics:
- The Great War and its consequences.
- The post-war period and the origins of totalitarianism.
- Italian fascism: the rise to the power.
- Italian fascism: foreign policy and consensus building.
- The Weimar Republic and the birth of National Socialism.
- Stalin’s Soviet Union.
- Intellectuals and culture in the Interwar period
- The origins of the Second World War and its developments.
- The collapse of the fascist dictatorship and the Italian Resistance.
- Post World War II and the new world geopolitical balances.
- The birth of Republican Italy.
- The United States world power.
- The Cold War.
- The processes of decolonization and youth protest movements.
- The collapse of communism.
- The processes of globalization and the new world balances.

Examination Methods
Examination procedure
1. Assessment methods: structured written exam in open and closed questions.
2. Objectives: to verify the ability to display historical concepts using appropriate terminology, the ability to link events and to place them adequately within the individual national contexts and the knowledge of the different historiographic interpretations of the most relevant historical processes.
3. Contents: the questions will focus on the topics covered during the course and developed in the volumes indicated in the bibliography.
4. Assessment method: score expressed in thirtieths, resulting from the sum of the attribute points for each of the questions.
The regulation of the degree program requires compliance with the propaedeutics of the modules: it is therefore not possible to face the module P without having passed the module I.
Students are not advised to deal with the form I and the P form in the same appeal.
Other informations
Erasmus students (and students hosted with other international mobility programs) who attend classes, can choose between these different choises:
1. written exam (also in English).
2. oral exam (in English, French and Spanish)

Corona Virus Emergency
Following the decisions made by the University authorities for the Corona Virus emergency, I inform you that the exams of Contemporary History (I+P), Contemporary History (Education sciences) will take place through a online written test. The exam of Contemporary History (LM) will take place through a online oral exam.
