Educational Objectives.
The course aims to provide knowledge of the main events in Italian and European history in the years between the Great War and the collapse of communism. It focuses on European political, cultural and social history, which is analyzed from a comparative and transnational perspective.
At the end of the course the student should be able to:
(a) identify the periodizations related to the different historical periods analyzed.
b) know the most relevant events of the period examined, with reference both to the general European and non-European framework and to the different national contexts.
c) orient themselves among the most important political cultures, outline the economic processes and social transformations that mark the historical phases considered,
d) make critical use of different historiographical interpretations.

1. The origins of the First World War.
2. The Great War and its legacies.
3. The Russian Revolution.
4. The postwar period in Europe and the origins of totalitarianisms.
5. The great crisis of the 1930s.
6. Italian fascism: origins, characters and ideology.
7. The Weimar Republic and the rise of National Socialism.
8. Fascism and the building of consensus.
9. The Soviet Union and Stalinist communism.
10. The origins of World War II and its developments.
11. The resistance in Italy and Europe.
12. Post-World War II and the new world geopolitical balances.
13. The golden age and the rise of the welfare society.
14. Youth protests, social conflicts and struggles for rights.
15. Republican Italy: from the postwar period to the economic boom.
16. Terrorism in Italy and the crisis of the first republic.
17. Europe, the United States, the USSR in the 1980s and 1990s.

Teaching modalities
The course is in-person with lecture recording.
It provides for alternating between lectures and viewing of audiovisual materials.
Learning assessment procedures
Examination procedure
1. Assessment methods: structured written exam in open and closed questions.
2. Objectives: to verify the ability to disply concepts using appropriate historical terminoloy, the ability to link events and to place them adequately within the individual national contexts, the knowledge of the different historiographical interpretations of the most relevant historical processes.
3. Contents: the questions will focus on the topics covered during the course and developed in the volumes indicated in the bibliography.
Evaluation criteria
4. Assessment methods: score expressed in thirtieths, resulting from the sum of the points assigned to each of the questions.
The regulation of the degree program requires compliance with the propaedeutics of the modules: it is therefore not possible to prepare the module P without having passed the module I.
Students are not advised to deal with the form I and the P form in the same appeal.

Students-Erasmus students (and students hosted under other international mobility programs) attending classes can choose from the following options:
1. Written exam (also in English).
2. Oral exam (in English, French).
