Learning objectives

History of Contemporary Philosophy
The course shows the main lines and currents of contemporary philosophy. The most general study is accompanied by the appropriate insights of the major figures of contemporary thought, also through the analysis of one or more of their fundamental works. At the end of the course, students will deepen their knowledge and comprehension of Western philosophical tradition and its main conceptual lines by acquiring a thorough knowledge of the authors and texts analyzed in the course. They will also develop their capacity to communicate philosophical contents to specialists and non-specialists alike, and the capacity to continue their studies at a MA level.

Prerequisites and basic notions

A general knowledge of the development of modern and contemporary philosophy.

Program

The problem of metaphysics in Martin Heidegger:
1) origin of metaphysic in Plato and the Platonic thought;
2) metaphysics in Christianity;
3) the modern gnosiological revolution;
4) metaphysics in Kant;
5) end or rebirth of metaphysics in Nietzsche?
6) Husserl's phenomenology;
7) the historicity of Being in Heidegger;
8) Sein und Zeit (1927);
9) Kant und das Problem der Metaphysik (1929);
10) the failed accomplishment of Heidegger's metaphysics;
11) metaphysics and the origin of culture.

Didactic methods

Lecture, reading and analysis regarding the course, discussions with the students on the topics explained.
The lectures will be recorded on Zoom.

Learning assessment procedures

Oral exam, based on a dialogue with the student starting from a subject suggested by the professor.

Evaluation criteria

General comprehension of the topics studied; ability to talk correctly and reason consistently; ability of a deeper interpretation; personal interest.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The evaluation is on a 30/30 basis and takes into account the abilities listed above, on the basis of a dialogue with the student examined.
