Program
Course Title and Content: "Authors and Problems of Ancient Philosophy
The course deals with authors and fundamental problems of ancient philosophy (6th century B.C.-6th century A.D.). The aim is to provide the essential tools for an initial approach to the discipline. Particular attention will be paid to the terminological and conceptual nuclei that characterise ancient thought, also in the light of its subsequent effects, particularly on contemporary thought.
The course is divided into three sections: 1) reading of handbook, accompanied by the reading of particularly significant passages (translated into Italian) by the most important exponents of ancient philosophy; 2) reading of texts on ancient philosophy (Book A of Aristotle's Metaphysics, Lives of the Philosophers by Diogenes Laertius, Hegel's Lectures on the History of Philosophy), aimed at gaining a philosophical perspective on the history of ancient philosophy; 3) monographic section devioted to "Plato and the passions" (with the option to write an essay).
Texts to be studied for the oral exam:
a) Handbook: L. PALUMBO, Trentadue ore di filosofia antica, Loffredo, Napoli 2015.
b) Ancient texts of history of philosophy: Course reserve of texts (available at the copy shop "Ateneo", Lungadige Porta Vittoria);
c) Text for the monographic section: F. BENONI and A. STAVRU, Platone e il governo delle passioni, Aguaplano, Perugia 2021 (one chapter of choice).
The recorded lectures will be available on the University's e-learning service and are part of the examination programme.
NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS:
Non-attending students will bring three chapters at their choice of the book "Platone e il governo delle passioni".

Examination Methods
Prerequisites: Surely a previous knowledge of the history of the ancient and mediaeval philosophy allows to work easier within this scientific field: however it is not compulsory. The same can be said as to the ancient Greek and Latin languages. Better, an attention to lexical research and an interest in a critical reading of philosophical texts are very useful.
Teaching Methods: The course will be carried out by frontal lessons, with an introductory presentation of thinkers and philosophical schools, with direct reading of the texts and following discussions. Lessons will be taken, if possible, in presence, or alternatively, at distance by elearning (requests of clarification will be satisfied also by email).
The same program applies to non-attending students, who will need to carefully prepare for the monographic section.
Assesments: the student will be examined orally; he will be invited to read and comment some passages of the examined texts. The student may write a short essay (5-7 pages) on the monographic section (Plato and the passions). She will send it to the teacher a week before the exam.
