Learning objectives

The aims of this course are to enable students to develop and consolidate the understanding of the syntactic and lexical-semantic aspects of contemporary English. C1 level (listening comprehension and reading comprehension) is a prerequisite for the course.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Program

The programme will explore the following aspects:
1. Syntax
- main definitions, sentence analysis
- Words, Word Classes and Phrases
- Clauses and Sentences
2. Semantics
- main definitions, words and their meaning
- The Structure of the English Lexicon
- Levels of meanings
Materials used during the lessons (slides) will be made available on the Moodle Platform.

Didactic methods

Frontal lessons + exercises provided by the teacher on Moodle
Class contents and study materials are the same for students who do not attend classes. Those students are invited to join the Moodle platform and to contact the instructor via email (office hours are available on the personal web page).
Methods of teaching support:
Guidelines and teaching materials will be uploaded in the Moodle platform of the module. Students are also invited to contact the instructor via e-mail or during office hours.
Students who may miss classes are invited to contact the instructor.

Learning assessment procedures

Written exam:
Open and closed questions on the topics of the course.
The written test will include a number of questions focusing on the topics covered during the course: multiple choice questions and open-ended questions will be included. The former will evaluate students’ theoretical knowledge; the latter will evaluate students’ ability to apply their knowledge in the analysis of texts.
During the last class students will have the opportunity to perform a mock exam.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade of the exam will be the average of the grade of the written exam and the grade obtained in the CLA computer test. The latter will be converted into /30 according to the CLA
