La France et l'ailleurs: images et reflets Starting from the 'big' image of France and its history, between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, offered by the novel by Dumas (in reading for selected parts and chapters), up to the contemporary , the course will propose to investigate how French universalism is reflected in otherness, or refracts it, starting from Lamartine's trip to Italy in Graziella up to selected passages of male and female travelers who will constitute geographical, social and cultural itineraries through the five continents. Following coherent thematic fils rouges, observations and descriptive renderings of the city, the landscape, the islands or navigation will be deduced from short pages by Chateaubriand, Mme de Staël, Pierre Loti, Paul Gauguin, André Gide, Simone de Beauvoir, JMG Le Clézio, in order to explore the image and the imaginary of the journey and of the elsewhere in the different eras and in the different regions. Apart from the two volumes indicated on Leganto, to be purchased, all the other passages and the critical bibliography will be uploaded to Moodle, with the relative indications for attending and non-attending students.
