Learning objectives

The course has as its general aim that of introducing the students to the understanding and the production of written texts in the tourist, economic, and commercial fields. On successful completion of this course, students should be able to: - distinguish between texts and pseudotexts; - characterize specialized texts on the basis of their lexical and syntactic features; - describe the main features of argumentative texts; - characterize the most important argumentative moves and rules in texts belonging to different text classes; - analyze texts (also in writing, i.e. Hausarbeiten) concerning the tourist, economic, and commercial field, and present them orally.

Prerequisites and basic notions

To take the exam, students must have passed Varietäten des Deutschen 1.

Program

"Understanding popular texts in the tourist, economic, and commercial fields"
A text is not simply an extended structure of syntactic units such as words, groups, clauses, and textual units, a text is a communicative language event in a context that is marked by completion. Starting from this perspective some basic concepts of the classical argumentation theory and text linguistics, such as the seven standards of textuality, (cohesion, coherence, intentionality, acceptability, informativity, situationality, intertextuality) and the three regulative principles (efficiency, effectiveness, appropriateness), will be introduced in the first part of the course. Furthermore some classifications of texts according to their function, and characteristic features of argumentative texts will be described in the first part of the course, whereas in the second part written texts in the economic, commercial, and tourist fields will be analyzed.
In general, the program for attending students and non-attending students is the same. However, students not attending the course should contact the Professor in a timely manner, to get a detailed explanation of the program and the examination methods.

Teaching method: frontal teaching, in small groups, flipped classroom.

Learning assessment procedures

The examination is both written (term paper) and oral (PowerPoint presentation). Since it is expected that attending students will have to give a PowerPoint presentation (Referat) and write a short paper at the end of the course, students who do not attend classes regularly will have to agree on the content of a paper with the university teacher of each module.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

- Design, planning, and organisation of the (oral or written) text;
- cohesion and textual coherence;
- lexical richness and mastery;
- grammatical correctness;
- breadth and accuracy of knowledge and secondary literature;
- critical and personal judgments.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

Students attending the course: paper = 1/2 of the final grade, PowerPoint presentation = 1/2 of the final grade. Students not attending the course (regularly): paper 1 = 1/2 of the final grade, paper 2 = 1/2 of the final grade.
