Learning outcomes
The course aims to improve the linguistic and translation competence of students at upper intermediate and advanced level. It aims also to promote the linguistic and metalinguistic reflection through the analysis of texts of different registers, written in simplified characters and in traditional characters, and related to general and specialized communicative contexts. At the end of the course the students will be able to communicate independently at an advanced level of written and spoken language, in general and specialized communication contexts. At the end of the course students have reached a level of linguistic and lexical knowledge corresponding to an HSK5 certificate, i.e. a C1 level in the international classification.
Program
The course is divided into two modules (Mod. 1 and Mod. 2), one for each semester.
The first module, in the part of the language teacher, aims at consolidating the linguistic-translational skills of the students at an intermediate and advanced level and at enhancing linguistic and metalinguistic reflection through the analysis of texts of the formal variety related to general and specialized communicative contexts. The course therefore aims to expand the vocabulary and linguistic structures in relation to texts belonging to different genres and types of formal texts.
The subject of the first module is syntactic structures and the typical vocabulary of written formal language (书面语), also with reference to Yu Feng's manual (2012) "A Learners' Handbook of Modern Chinese Written Expressions", as well as to materials and texts provided or indicated by the teacher.
Lessons with the mother tongue teacher will instead focus on colloquial language of intermediate to advanced level, with specific reference to Volume 6 of the series "新目标汉语 口语课本 New Target Chinese Spoken Language".
The second module develops an analogous programme of linguistic and metalinguistic reflection in reference to the variety of the sectoral language to guide the student to the understanding and translation of the intermediate-advanced legal-commercial language. The subject of the study will be the volume of B. Leonesi (2011) "说汉语谈生意 Cinese & Affari – Manuale Pratico di Cinese Commerciale” (units 1-9) and further materials uploaded online by the teacher. Students will learn the basics of some techniques of translation of texts of a legal-commercial nature.
A consolidated and in-depth knowledge of the highly formal language (书面语) studied during the first module is therefore essential.
The language lessons will be accompanied by conversation exercises with the mother tongue teacher, which will allow the students to actively use the specialized vocabulary.

Examination Methods
The final exam consists of two parts, all tested for each of the two modules of the course: (A - 翻译) a written test containing tests of active translation and passive translation, of words, phrases and texts similar to those analyzed during each module; (B - 会话) a test of conversation in Chinese, and a discussion of the linguistic topics analysed during the two modules, eventually based on the preliminary submission of a final paper. The final grade is expressed out of 30. It is necessary to achieve passing marks in all tests to pass the exam. All tests must be passed within the same examination round: those who want to or must repeat the exam must necessarily take all parts again (written, oral).
HSK certificates will not be accepted as a substitute for the exam or any of its parts.
