Learning objectives

Provide the theoretical and methodological knowledge required for forensic genetics' DNA analysis and data interpretation.

Prerequisites and basic notions

There are no specific prerequisites different from those required for access to the PhD programme.

Program

The course program includes: Introduction to Forensic Genetics Collection, preservation and characterization of biological samples DNA extraction and quantification DNA amplification via PCR Markers used in forensic genetics (STRs, Indels, SNPs and mitochondrial DNA) Typing of PCR products in capillary electrophoresis (CE) and massively parallel sequencing (MPS) Data interpretation: data interpretation thresholds and stochastic effects DNA profiling and weight as evidence with legal value Crime scene investigation: degraded DNA, Low Copy Number typing, mixed DNA profiles, Determination of biological paternity and parental relationships (GOAL 3, and GOAL13) The seminars will be held from 06 February to 14 February 2025 (legal medicine classroom, first floor dental floor - polyclinic).
