Learning objectives
Provide the theoretical and methodological knowledge required for forensic genetics' DNA analysis and data interpretation.
Prerequisites and basic notions
There are no specific prerequisites different from those required for access to the PhD programme.
Program
The teaching program includes: Introduction to Forensic Genetics Collection, conservation and characterization of biological samples DNA extraction and quantification DNA amplification via PCR Markers used in forensic genetics (STRs, Indels, SNPs and mitochondrial DNA) Typing of PCR products in capillary electrophoresis (CE) and massively parallel sequencing (MPS) Data interpretation: data interpretation thresholds and stochastic effects DNA profiling and weight as evidence with legal value Crime scene investigation: degraded DNA, Low Copy Number typing, mixed profiles of DNA, Establishment of biological paternity and parental relationships (GOAL 3, and GOAL13)
The seminars will be held from 01 March to 07 June 2024 (Ca' Vignal 3).

1. PhD students must obtain a specified number of CFUs each year by attending teaching activities offered by the PhD School.
First and second year students must obtain 8 CFUs. Teaching activities ex DM 226/2021 provide 5 CFUs; free choice activities provide 3 CFUs.
Third year students must obtain 4 CFUs. Teaching activities ex DM 226/2021 provide 2 CFUs; free choice activities provide 2 CFUs.

2. Registering for the courses is not required unless explicitly indicated; please consult the course information to verify whether registration is required or not.
