Learning objectives

The course aims to introduce the student to the use of databases of biomedical interest accessible through the computer network. The course aims to familiarize the student with the information accessible from the main biological and genetic databases and to develop the ability to use genomic analysis tools in the study of human diseases.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Knowledge of biology is a prerequisite for attending the course.

Program

During the practical exercises, the following computational tools for querying the major databases will be used: GeneBank, Genecards, SwissProt, CDD (Conserved Domain Database), and OMIM (Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man). The human genome sequences will be analyzed using alignment algorithms such as BLAST (Basic Local Alignment Search Tool) and FASTA; research strategies based on the alignment programs will be applied to genomic sequence analysis; programs accessible by the server ExPASy (Expert Protein Analysis System) Bioinformatic resource portal will be used for protein analysis.

Bibliography

Visualizza la bibliografia con Leganto, strumento che il Sistema Bibliotecario mette a disposizione per recuperare i testi in programma d'esame in modo semplice e innovativo.

Didactic methods

The teacher will use: a) theoretical lessons; b) practical lessons in the bioinformatics laboratory; c) e-learning activities.

Learning assessment procedures

An examination paper is not required. An electronic document will be completed.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Assessment

Classroom attendance is required to acquire course credits.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

There is no final grade
