Learning objectives
The training objectives of the course are: knowledge of the fundamental principles and main applications of flow cytometry; ability to choose the most suitable test to answer the investigation question; ability to perform a multiparametric cytometry experiment (choice of fluorochromes, spectral compensation, management of the instrument and the acquisition and analysis software); ability to analyze and interpret cytometric data.
Prerequisites and basic notions
No prerequisites required.
Program
The fundamental principles of flow cytometry: introduction and historical notes, the components of the instrument, notes on the light-matter interaction, notes on the optical path, analysis and interpretation of the data. Multiparametric flow cytometry: introduction, fluorochromes, controls in flow cytometry, spectral compensation. The main applications of multiparametric flow cytometry: immunophenotyping in immunology and haematological diagnostics; phosphospecific flow cytometry. Latest generation flow cytometry: mass cytometry and spectral cytometry.
Bibliography
Didactic methods
The teaching includes the integration of theoretical lectures and laboratory exercises. The analysis of scientific articles relating to the topics covered in the course will also be proposed.
Learning assessment procedures
At the end of the course, students will be asked to present and discuss a scientific article on a topic related to teaching, with particular reference to the cytometric investigation techniques used.
Assessment
The evaluation will be positive if the student has actively participated in the lessons and discussed the proposed scientific article.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
There is no final grade.
