Learning objectives

In accordance with the periodization adopted in our French literature courses (first year: from 1850 to today; second year: Eighteenth century and first half of the Nineteenth century; third year: Sixteenth and Seventeenth centuries), this course introduces to French literature from 1700 to 1850. The course will focus on great authors and texts belonging to different literary genres, and will also improve the knowledge of the literary movements and of their historical, sociocultural, aesthetic contexts. A particular attention will be payed to the various and important aspects of the publishing industry during the period, as the course also addresses to the students of the Bachelor's degree in Languages and Literatures for Publishing and Digital Media. The course, as well as the primary and secondary bibliography, will be in French, which is intended to help students to improve their linguistic comprehension and fluency. At the end of the course, students shall therefore acquire overall knowledge of the history of French literature from 1700 to 1850 (main literary movements, authors and works), along with the capacity of applying, in French, critical and textual analysis competences to the texts presented during the course.

Program

The course, held entirely in French, aims to provide students with an introduction to French literature from the early 18th century to the first half of the 19th century. Organized chronologically, the lessons will focus on the presentation of the historical-literary context, the main literary movements and some canonical authors; primary texts and paradigmatic passages will also be read and commented. The full reading in French of the texts and the study of the textbooks and critical essays indicated are complementary to the lessons.
Students who are unable to attend the course should read the texts in the recommended editions, the preface / introduction of which is an integral part of the syllabus. Detailed syllabus and further bibliographic details regarding the bibliographic in-depth materials will be indicated at the beginning of the course. Non-attending students are invited to contact the teacher to agree on the examination program: in order to facilitate the acquisition of the necessary knowledge, specific critical essays will be indicated. Non attending students are also requested to study the prefaces / introductions in the indicated editions. In any case, the complete program for attendees and non-attendees will be published in e-learning. The modalities of the course, together with the presentation of the materials, will be exposed during the first lesson and remembered at the end of the course, together with indications on the conduct of the final exam.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam will consist of an oral test during the official exam sessions, will be held in French and will be the same for attending and non-attending students (non attending students should obviously consider the diversity of critical readings necessary to facilitate their critical analysis of primary texts). The first part of the exam will focus on the evaluation of the knowledge of the literature of the period (see lecture notes, manuals), while during the second part the knowledge of the anthological passages and of the primary texts in the program will be evaluated, as well as the student's ability to analyze the corpus (see course notes, critical essays and materials indicated in the bibliography).
