Learning objectives

The course aims to introduce the student to the knowledge of the main pictorial techniques in use between the Middle Ages and the Contemporary Age; to the comparative evaluation of technical-artistic issues that characterize the artifacts in different eras; to the critical identification of restoration interventions; to the knowledge of the main non-invasive diagnostic techniques and their use in the study of artistic techniques. At the end of the course, the student must be able to: recognize the procedures and materials that characterize the different artistic techniques; identify the evolutionary lines of the techniques in the different eras; develop comparative reasoning among works belonging to different eras; recognize and critically evaluate the contribution of restoration; recognize and know how to discuss the contribution of diagnostic analysis to the study of the history of techniques and restoration.

Prerequisites and basic notions

No prerequisites are required

Program

During the course, the artistic techniques that characterize the execution of mural painting and its conservation will be investigated and deepened, focusing the analysis on the "stacco" and "strappo" techniques. To this end, significant case studies will be taken into consideration through which it will be possible to enter into detail not only of the technical specificities of the individual painters, but also to introduce aspects relating to the cultural context in which they are located, to diagnostics as a tool for understanding creative processes underlying the artistic elaboration and the history of restoration and conservation. As an introduction and accompaniment to these topics, a general preparatory course on the main pictorial materials and techniques in use in the Middle Ages and in the Modern Age is foreseen, in order to offer students a framework for framing individual cases and the methodological tools essential for knowledge of the matter. The topics covered in class will be illustrated via power point which will also be made available to non-attending students in moodle.

Bibliography

Visualizza la bibliografia con Leganto, strumento che il Sistema Bibliotecario mette a disposizione per recuperare i testi in programma d'esame in modo semplice e innovativo.

Didactic methods

The course will take place through lectures with the help of power point and web supports; workshop activities, visits to museums and meetings with professionals and scholars of the discipline are planned.

Learning assessment procedures

The final assessment of preparation takes the form of an oral examination.
The assessment of attending students will take into account their participation in the seminar activities; bibliographical supplements will be provided for non-attending students.
Examination preparation will be based on the bibliography indicated in Leganto and the power points uploaded onto moodle.
The duration of the examination is directly proportional to the level of preparation demonstrated by the student.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The test will focus on the topics covered in class and on the notions acquired through the specific bibliography of the course. The ability to organize knowledge, to identify the constituent elements of the case studies, to critically reason the disciplinary themes, the ability to correctly use the technical vocabulary will be evaluated.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final vote is expressed in thirtieths
