M-FIL/05 - PHILOSOPHY AND THEORY OF LANGUAGE

Period

Sem. IIA dal Feb 26, 2018 al Apr 21, 2018.

Learning outcomes

The course aims at providing examples of the contribution contemporary philosophy has made to the understanding:
- of the functioning of language,
- of the relation between language, material reality and social reality.
At the end of the course, students will have to prove that they:
- accurately know the subjects of the program,
- are able to expose them in a consequential and concise way,
- have acquired an independent judgement.

Program

Course title: Words, Things, Subjectivites

Course content:
Michel Foucault, one of the most influential thinkers of the XXth Century, has changed our way of doing philosophy. He was a multifaceted intellectual whose interests ranged from history and literary criticism to epistemology and political philosophy. All his work is traversed by a reflection on the relation between language, reality and subjectivities. Aim of this seminar is to account for such reflection and the way in which it connects to the three stages of his theoretical journey: that is, the archaeological , the genealogical and the ethical phases.

Methods: Seminar classes, topic discussions.
