Learning objectives

" The course aims to provide students with an exhaustive picture of the Italian literary tradition (texts, contexts, methods, themes, problems, forms and contents) from the origins to the Unification of Italy (introductory part) and to deepen students' knowledge of the Italian literature, with particular reference to a precise phase of its historical development, through the direct analysis of the work of a particularly representative author of that specific period and culture (advanced part). "

Prerequisites and basic notions

Notions of metric and rhetoric; manualistic knowledge (at the level of high school) of the texts and fundamental lines of development of the Italian literary tradition from the origins to the whole nineteenth century.

Program

The first part of the course will be dedicated to the presentation of the main moments and authors of the Italian literary tradition from the thirteenth century to the unification of Italy, with analysis of exemplary texts. For the preparation of the first part, we will use:
1. Pierantonio Frare, Simona Brenna, Dalle origini a Leopardi: la letteratura italiana e le sue grandi opere, Milano, Pearson Education, 2023 ISBN: 9788891931993.
2. Anthology of texts by the major authors of our literary tradition. The anthology will be uploaded to the University e-learning platform. For attending students, the texts to be analyzed will be indicated by the teacher during the course. During the exam, non-attending students must submit a written and detailed list of the selected pieces, under penalty of exclusion from the exam itself. These pieces will be chosen from each of the following works according to the instructions indicated below: -DANTE ALIGHIERI, Divine Comedy: five songs of the Divine Comedy among those in anthology -FRANCESCO PETRARCA, Canzoniere: five compositions, of which at least one song -GIOVANNI BOCCACCIO , Decameron: five short stories -NICOLÒ MACHIAVELLI: two chapters of the Prince and a scene from the Mandrake -LUDOVICO ARIOSTO, Orlando furioso: one of the songs in the anthology -TORQUATO TASSO, Gerusalemme liberata: one of the songs in the anthology -CARLO GOLDONI: one act of his choice of a comedy -GIUSEPPE PARINI: an ode or a passage of the Day -VITTORIO ALFIERI: an act of Myrrh or an anthological passage of Life -UGO FOSCOLO: two sonnets or a section of the Sepulchres -GIACOMO LEOPARDI: three songs and one of the Operettas morals -ALESSANDRO MANZONI: a poem or a passage from the novel.
The second part will be devoted to the works of Alessandro Manzoni. We will particularly reflect on the theme: i Promessi sposi and the elaboration of a new morality for Italians.

Non-attending students will prepare the following program:

Didactic methods

Teaching methods: Frontal lessons in the classroom. Exercises in reading and interpreting literary texts. Any seminars and written exercises. The teaching materials offered are part of the exam program.

Learning assessment procedures

The assessment of the preparation will take place through a written and oral exam, aimed above all at verifying the direct knowledge and the ability to analyze the texts. Regarding the first part, the student will be required to know the main lines of Italian literary history from its origins to the 19th century. The student will have to study with particular attention the biography of the authors and the texts presented in the anthology. The first part of the exam is written for those who bring the current year's program. An ongoing written test is foreseen for those attending the course, which will focus on the first part of the course. The first question will concern the biography of an author, the second a text read and commented on in class. For those who bring programs from previous years or choose to take the exam as not attending the exam on the first part will be oral: you will be asked to read, paraphrase and comment on the texts chosen by the student. Attending students will focus in particular on the texts read and commented on in class. The second part of the exam is oral and will verify the learning level of the advanced part of the course. The student who brings the program for attending students will have to know the biography and the works of the authors presented during the course; they must also be able to autonomously introduce, paraphrase and comment on the texts explained in class. Program for non-attending students: Boccaccio Decameron, introduction, notes and repertoire of things (and words) from the world of Amedeo Quondam; critical text and note to the text by Maurizio Fiorilla; introductory cards and biographical information by Giancarlo Alfano, Milan, Bur Rizzoli, 2018: Proemio, introduction to the first day; all the stories of the second day, with introduction and conclusion. Boccaccio, edited by Maurizio Fiorilla and Irene Iocca, Rome, Carocci editore, 2021: introduction and chapters 1-4. The three essays by Delmolino, Bausi and Battaglia Ricci found on the Moodle website (https://moodledidattica.univr.it/course/view.php?id=8923) Students can decide to take the two parts of the exam in the same appeal, or in two separate appeals.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

In particular for the first part: 1) Verification of historical-literary knowledge and relative capacity for contextualization; 2) Verification of the ability to understand and analyze the different types of literary texts through the detailed examination of texts in verse and prose exemplary. In particular for the second part: 1) Verification of the ability to contextualize and critically analyze the texts also with reference to the main methods of investigation; 2) Verification of knowledge of the reference critical bibliography and of the ability to use it in reference to the texts analyzed.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade will be the result of the average of the evaluations on the two parts of the exam. The vote is expressed in 30/30.
