Learning outcomes
The course is conceived as an introduction to logic and philosophy of science, showing the most important philosophical problems connected to the development of the scientific method. At the end of the course the student must be able to recognize the different kinds of reasoning and to distinguish correct reasoning from fallacies. He must also shall prove to have understood the nature of modern scientific research and the link between science and reasoning.
Program
The course aims at providing students with some basic tools from formal logic which underlie much research on natural language.
In the first part of the course we will introduce the fundamental tools of set theory, focusing not only on its formal dimension but also on its application to natural language. We will also introduce the predicate calculus, the notions of predicate, arguments, and well-formed formula, propositions and relations between propositions by means of logical connectives, and truth tables.
The second part will deal with relations between propositions. We will introduce the notion of ‘rule of inference’ and analyse natural language predicates and constructions. We will evaluate arguments and identify legitimate chains of inference using tools from Hilbert systems.
Finally, we will introduce some fundamental issues in the architecture of formal axiomatic systems and their consequences for the development of scientific theories: decidibility, completeness, consistency. We will examine the falsifiability program (Popper, Lakatos) in terms of its virtues and shortcomings and the notion of 'scientific revolution' and 'scientific paradigm'.
THE COURSE WILL BE DELIVERED IN ENGLISH ONLY

Examination Methods
The final exam aims at assessing the theoretical knowledge acquired by the students during the course, as well as their ability to apply this knowledge. The exam will be written, it will have a duration of 75 minutes, and will consist of a combination of open questions and exercises on set theory, logical inference, and natural language problems aimed at evaluating the extent to which the student has incorporated the theoretical notions seen during the course. The focus of the final exam will be eminently practical.
