Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will be able to: - know the basic notions and the methodological tools to operate on French lexicon; - apply basic notions for the dectection of lexical phenomena; - know the main laws concerning language policy in the francophone world; - for the students in Tourism and Commerce: apply theoretical notions for the detection of phenomena concerning specialized lexicon; - for the the students in Foreign Languages and Literatures and in Edition: acquire the main notions of lexicography and demonstrate a good knowledge of the most important lexicographic tools of the French and Francophone domains; - demonstrate to have atteined a B2 level in French language.
Program
OBJECTIVES AND EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES
The training course "Langue française II" aims to provide introductory knowledge of the morphosemantics of the French language and the methodological tools necessary for lexical and lexicographic analysis activities conducted on authentic texts in French. Through the description of contemporary French and its varieties, it aims to provide a precise path on the different processes of lexicon formation in a synchronic and diachronic perspective and to propose an examination of the main types of semantic relations between lexemas in a discursive and lexicultural perspective. Moreover, the course aims to introduce the student to the concept of linguistic variation through a metalinguistic reflection on the norm (legislative level and linguistic policies), exploring the main factors of variation itself and their interrelation in French and French-speaking contexts. Finally, the course provides a basic methodological framework of lexicography and dictionnairique and a general overview of the history of French lexicography and the main French dictionaries (paper, computerized and databases).
At the end of the course the student must demonstrate that he or she has acquired the theoretical knowledge of the morphosemantic elements faced in class, that he or she knows how to identify the semantic relations between lexemas, to recognize the main forms of linguistic variation characterizing the French-speaking context and to know the history of French lexicography and of the main lexicographic tools analyzed in the classroom. More specifically, the student should be able: a) to describe the French language at various levels of linguistic analysis (morphology, lexicology, semantics) in relation to the norm and use; b) to recognize the different parameters of linguistic variation, in their interrelation on texts of various kinds and different registers in the French-speaking world; c) to recognize, analyze and define the characteristics of a dictionary, in relation to the history of the French language and lexicography.
TEACHING METHODOLOGY
The teaching includes frontal and interactive lessons by the teacher, aimed at guiding students in learning the topics covered by the course. The lessons, carried out by the teacher in French and with a communicative approach, will promote comprehension, reading skills, interpretation and linguistic analysis of lexical phenomena faced in the classroom. In order to verify in itinere the acquisition of the topics covered during the lessons, guided classroom activities are provided in the form of exercises, tâches and self-assessment tests aimed at ascertaining the achievement of the objectives.
In addition, during the academic year students will be able to attend lectures and seminars held by scholars from the French-speaking world, hosted at the University.
PROGRAM
The teaching will cover the following topics, in the order indicated:
Lexicology: basic notions (langue, words, langage, lexie, vocable, lexème, mot, sens, référent, signifié);
Lexical morphology: the processes of word formation;
Lexical semantics: polysemy, homonymy, synonymy, antonymy, hyperonymy-hyponymy;
Linguistic policy: evolution of the legislative provisions implemented in the French and French-speaking contexts for the diffusion of the French language; definition of Francophonie, the languages of France;
Notions of lexicography, metalexicography, dictionnairique; the structure of a dictionary (microstructure and macrostructure).
Historical path of French lexicography from its origins (1539) to contemporary times; reading, analysis and comparison of extracts and passages from French dictionaries.
The study and examination programme is the same for both attending and non-attending students, but the latter are invited to contact the teacher via email for indications and explanations on some aspects of the programme. The teacher will provide support and tutoring during the set reception hours.
Students attending and not attending will be able to consult the material provided during the course and the related in-depth studies by accessing the virtual classroom "Langue française II" on the University's Moodle platform.

Examination Methods
The oral test, entirely in French, focuses on the verification of the acquisition of the thematic content covered by the course and can be taken only after having achieved a language certification equal to level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL) at the University Language Centre or other certification body recognized by the MIUR.
The final grade, expressed in thirtieths, is obtained from the weighted average between the grade of the language certification (converted into thirtieths as per the "Vademecum normative for students of the Area of Foreign Languages and Literature") and that of the oral test.
The evaluation criteria of the oral test will take into account: a) level of knowledge of the basic concepts of morpho-semantics, lexicology and lexicography; b) degree of articulation of the response; c) ability to apply the knowledge in identifying and describing in a relevant way lexical and morphological phenomena of French; d) ability to recognize and analyze the stages of the evolution of language policy in the French-speaking area and French lexicography; e) correctness and effectiveness of the exposure (adequacy of the terminology used, use of explanatory examples of theoretical concepts).
Propaedeuticity: in order to take the "Langue française II" exam, it is compulsory to have a French language certification equal to or higher than level B2, issued by the Centro Linguistico di Ateneo (CLA) or by certifying bodies recognised by the MIUR such as the Institut Français and the Alliance Française. In this regard, DELF-DALF certifications obtained in the three years prior to the current academic year are accepted. For the recognition of the ESABAC diploma, it is necessary to present to the teacher the certificate of the fifteenth grade (only the ESABAC test and not the entire State Examination) issued by the Liceo and/or Italian Institute.
