Learning outcomes

The course aims to offer a knowledge of the structures and the development of Italian language, as a basis for its aware use in the field of communication. In particular the course aims to the understanding of the peculiarities of Italian, in its history and its present use, with special attention to the dialectic between national language and dialects, written and spoken language, standard and usage varieties, history of language and history of culture and society, within the framework of the other European languages and in its relation to mass media. By the end of the course, students should have acquired a critical knowledge of the communicational articulations and structural limits of Italian.

Program

THEMATIC AREAS OF THE COURSE
• Distinctive features of Italian: geographical distribution, dialects and national language, historical grammar (15 hours).
• History of Italian: diachronic profile for centuries, from late antiquity to the present day (20 hours).
• Standard and varieties of contemporary Italian (10 hours).
• The political language (5 hours).
• Italian in contemporary media (15 hours).
• Some points of the grammar system (7 hours).

TEACHING METHODS
The teaching methods consist of lectures that describe the structural elements of Italian and trace its historical path. Specific insights are dedicated to conceptual issues, critical moments, intellectual debate on language. Particular attention is paid to arousing in students the awareness of their own skills as native speakers, favoring their active interventions and proposing surveys on single problems.
With regard to non-attending students, the teaching methods consist of a teacher's support for an updated study. Any further updates will be made available to the student in good time through the e-learning platform.
At the end of the course, the teacher will publish the analytical list of all the topics that will be examined on the e-learning platform.

Examination Methods

The assessment of the learning outcomes includes a written test: 28 closed-ended questions, 2 open-ended questions.
For Erasmus students, the test takes the form of an oral exam. The teacher will clarify the contents and methods of the test in class.
