To understand the fundamental processes of the science of DNA and the flow of information that leads from DNA to RNA to proteins. To understand mechanisms, function and regulation of these processes. To educate medical students to the scientific method through the description of experiments that allowed the elucidation of molecular biological mechanisms. To understand recombinant DNA technologies and their potential.

The course aims to provide the basic knowledge of the principles and mechanisms of human and molecular genetics responsible for the transmission of normal and abnormal characters in humans, as well as the mode of occurrence of hereditary biological variation.
Professionalizing objectives
The course aims to provide the future doctor with the knowledge and tools necessary to be able to advise the patient and his family in presence of a genetic or hereditary disease, about the nature of the disease, its incidence, prognosis, risks recurrence, preventive options, available therapeutic and reproductive options, and of the available genetic tests, whether diagnostic, symptomatic, predictive, pre- or post-natal. At the end of the course the student should be able to ask the appropriate questions to draw and interpret human pedigrees, distinguish different types of inheritance, request genetic tests to confirm (or exclude) a suspected genetic disease and interpret their results, knowing how to efficiently counsel patients and families about the nature of genetic disease, as well as to assess recurrence and occurrence of reproductive genetic risks (genetic counselling), indicating possible genetic and environmental causes in multifactorial diseases, enumerating the possible causes and types of gene mutation and be able to derive the frequency of the disease gene/allele frequency in populations.

- General Genetics. Mendel’s laws in man (dominant, recessive, X-linked and mitochondial inheritance) and atypical inheritance patterns. Example of mendelian diseases.
- Diseases due to unstable tripleat expansion.
- General and medical cytogenetics. Standard and pathological human karyotype. Chromosome anomalies, numerical and structural. Microdeletions disorders.
- Epigenentics and genomic imprinting. Uniparental Disomy. Cytogenetic pre- and post-natal diagnosis.
- Mutations, mutagenesis and DNA repair.
- Complex (Multifactorial) inheritance: Genetic susceptibility to complex diseases. Genome scans and genome association studies (GWAS).
- Exome, Genome, Transcriptome: definition and analysis. Bioinformatics and Genomics.
- Pharmacogenetics.
- Clinical Genetics: Genetic Counselling. Pedigree drawing and interpretation. Genetic risks estimation. Pre and post-natal counseling. Prenatal and Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis. Prevention and treatment of genetic disease. Genetic testing: diagnostic, symptomatic and asymptomatic testing, screening. Gene therapy. Regenerative medicine: stem cells. Bioethical and social issues.

Examination Methods
In order to pass he whole exam, students should demonstrate to have learned the necessary knowledges listed in the programme, e to demonstrate skills in exposing thei arguments in a critical and precise way, using an appropriate scientific language.
Each academic year includes 6 exam sessions, arranged as follows: two exams in the winter session, at the end of the Course, two exams in the Summer session, and two exams in the Autumn session.
Each exam is made of two parts, each part passable separately within the same academic year: Molecular Biology (6CFU) and Molecular/Medical Genetics (tiotal 9CFU). Each part consists of a written test of mutiple choice questions, open questions and exercises, followed by an oral test (provided the written test is passed). The exam is passed if the score in each part is equal to or greater than 18/30; the final cumulative score, in thirtieths (.../30), is calculated from the weighted average of the scores of two modules. Students who pass only one part of the exam are allowed to take the other part only in the next sessions, provided they are within the same academic year.

IMPORTANT NOTICES - According to the Legislative Decree. n.18 of 17 March 2020 "Cura Italia" converted into law n. 27/2020 of 24 April 2020.
Students enrolled in the LM/41 class (Class of master's degrees in medicine and surgery)
The MUR, with note protocol n. 8610 of 25/3/2020 with the object: "Abilitation to practice the profession of Doctor-Surgeon - art. 102 - Legislative Decree 17 March 2020, n. 18 (converted with amendments by Law 24 April 2020, n. 27), provides for adapting the LM/41 class system to the regulations above.
Those who have completed/will complete the pre-graduation practical-evaluative internship with a judgment of suitability (according to Ministerial Decree 58/2018), having obtained their degree, are authorized to practice the profession of doctor-surgeon and can proceed with registration at the Medical Association.
Issuance of the licensing certificate
The following fees are required to be paid for the purpose of issuing the professional license:
State fee in the amount of €49.90 to be paid before attendance of the practical evaluation internship begins;
regional habilitation fee to be paid upon delivery of the habilitation title.
Students enrolled in Class 46/S (Class of Master's Degrees in Medicine and Surgery) and predecessor orders (currently out of course) or students enrolled in Class LM/41 with cohorts prior to the 2014 cohort (currently out of course).
The MUR, in Memorandum Prot. No. 8610 of 3/25/2020 with the subject: “Habilitation to practice as a Doctor-Surgeon - Article 102 - Decree Law March 17, 2020 no. 18” provides that, those enrolled in the former systems, with practical traineeship provided post - graduation (pursuant to DM 445/2001), without prejudice to the rules on the forfeiture of studies, may conclude the course of study without necessarily having to acquire, for the purpose of admission to the final graduation examination, the judgment of suitability of the aforementioned evaluative practical traineeship. In this case, the degree to be issued by the University will have the value only of an academic title. It will remain without prejudice, in any case,in the possibility for such subjects to eventually obtain the license to practice as a medical-surgical doctor at a later date, according to the modalities set forth in paragraph 2 of Article 102, that is, by achieving the evaluation of the internship prescribed by Ministerial Decree No. 445/2001. The Athenaeum will continue to prepare a separate qualification diploma.
Please note that the aforementioned students are in any case allowed to opt for the new system in accordance with the terms and procedures.
