Learning objectives
The course aims to frame the use of high throughput techniques, and in particular massive sequencing, in the context of the histopathological analysis of neoplastic diseases. High throughput profiling techniques have given a strong boost to research in this field, bringing to light numerous alterations and continuing to provide new information at an impressive speed. However, the analysis of the data and above all the interpretation and validation, as well as the determination of the clinical impact of the various alterations, still pose serious challenges both at the level of translational research and at the level of integration with current diagnostic and clinical routines in a framework that must allow interaction between pathologists, surgeons and oncologists. In this course, through the presentation of data from the relevant literature on the subject and through the illustration of the teacher's direct experiences in the field of genomics/transcriptomics data analysis, an overview of the current possibilities for defining profiles of alterations in different types of tumors and the current limitations and frontiers in the interpretation of the profiles themselves. A description of the profiling techniques set in the reality of the pathological laboratory will also be provided, with the evaluation of the critical points for the production of reliable information.
