Program

The workshop will be held by Prof. Piergiovanna Grossi (piergiovanna.grossi@univr.it)
The activity involves 50 hours of total commitment on the part of the participants, of which 18 hours of teaching (9 hours in presence and 9 hours in asynchronous mode).
The workshop aims to provide knowledge of wiki technologies and methodologies for publishing content online and for translating texts into Italian.
At the end of the workshop, participants will have to demonstrate that they have acquired the methodological and technical skills necessary for the creation and translation of Wikipedia entries, i.e. that they know how to navigate the procedures for research, analysis and critical revision of entries specifically dedicated to cultural heritage. Knowledge and skills acquired at the end of the workshop
- use an interdisciplinary and critical methodological approach in reading, understanding and interpreting Wikipedia entries published in English, as a minimum
- learn techniques for translating Wikipedia entries from other languages into Italian;
- be familiar with wiki technologies and know how to create popular content.
ALL ROADS LEAD TO VERONA
Keeping Verona as the point of arrival, a series of ancient routes (mainly Roman and medieval) will be identified during the workshops and the relevant entries will be translated and expanded from various foreign languages into Italian.
The workshop is divided into two modules.
MODULE 1 (theoretical and practical in-presence lessons - 9 hours):
- copyright and free licences in dissemination on the web;
- introduction to Wikimedia: Wikipedia, Wikidata, Commons;
- wiki technology: how to create and translate a Wikipedia page.
MODULE 2 (practical activities in asynchronous mode - 9 hours):
Creation of Wikipedia entries:
- research and choice of one or more Wikipedia entries to be updated and translated into Italian;
- translation and updating of the selected Wikipedia entries in Italian (via wiki);
- checking and publishing the new entries created.
All material produced during the activities will be released under a free licence (CC-BY-SA).

Didactic methods

The course is structured in lectures and practical activities. After a theoretical introduction, which will be carried out face-to-face, students will practice translating and updating Wikipedia entries, experimenting with the main wiki tools and other technologies used by Wikimedia (wikidata, open street map, etc.).

Learning assessment procedures

Students are expected to publish at least two new entries or updates of two Wikipedia entries. The workshop will end with an oral test on the activities carried out. Students will have to present the created entries, describing the translations carried out and the methodologies and technologies used.
Participation in at least 7 hours of the 9 hours scheduled in the workshop is required for the final examination.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE
