Learning objectives
At the end of the course, the student will need to demonstrate to have acquired the main interdisciplinary foundations of Romance Philology (historical linguistics, textual criticism and medieval Romance literature).
Prerequisites and basic notions
No prerequisites required. Nonetheless, a knowledge of Latin can certainly be facilitating.
Program
The course will be organized into three thematic areas, accompanied by as many in-depth studies regarding digital philology: 1. Philology and ecdotics: in the first part of the course the main methods of editing medieval texts and the problems connected to them will be illustrated. The more general themes will be accompanied by an introduction to TEI-XML writing for the critical edition of medieval texts. 2. Romance linguistics: the second section of the course will focus on the evolution of Romance languages from Latin, analyzing some recurring phenomena. In particular, some sources of Vulgar Latin will be studied and the historical path of evolution will be retraced. The digital tools useful for the linguistic study of texts will then be presented, from the corpus of Old French dictionaries (e.g. TL, DMF, Deafel), up to the query tools of digital editions (e.g. Index of Forms, Rialfri) 3. Romance literature. The main literary genres of medieval romance literature will be presented, accompanied by significant readings. A series of texts published in digital edition will be included within the chosen readings (e.g. Chanson d'Aspremont, Huon d'Auvergne).
