Learning outcomes
Workshop on Early Christianity
The laboratory aims to provide in-depth critical knowledge in the field of the history of ancient Christianity, particularly of the period of its origins (I-II century). At the end of the workshop, students will acquire a deeper knowledge of an era that left durable marks on the wider history of Western civilization and philosophy, and will be capable to autonomously form judgements on specific cultural issues.
Program
The lessons approach the extraordinary figure of Jesus of Nazareth from the perspective of historical investigation, putting confessional approaches in parentheses - as far as possible. These are the steps: the history of research and methodology (from Reimarus to the “Third Quest”, evaluation of documents and criteria for authenticity); historical-critical investigation of the actions / behaviors and preaching of Jesus (reading of the sources, analysis of the contents, possible interpretations of self-understanding); Jesus in the face of his death (socio-political and religious context); the resurrection: historical evaluation and impact on the disciples.
After the introduction (lessons 1 and 2), supplementary material will be provided (in addition to that reported in the bibliography) for further study and discussion during classes.
