Learning outcomes

The course will be divided in two parts. The first lessons will be focused on the main theories that have made communication sociology's history. Afterwards the analysis will be opened up to face-to-face interaction theorized by the sociologist Goffman. By the end of the course, students should be able to draft a paper work on everything sustained by Goffman, comparing ideas and suggestions came up from personal reflections on how face-to-face interaction has changed due to the technological innovation and how this has brought humans relationships to regression.

Program

The course's main purposes are to give basic theories to study social and behavioral processes, paying particular attention on face-to-face interaction's deepening. Those objectives will be achieved through the exposure of the several research traditions' main theoretical approaches related to sociology and communication. Starting off from the definition of "Information" and "Communication" meaning s, three big areas of communication sociology will be drawn up: interpersonal communication, mass communication and new media & Internet communication. The second part will be focused on the first area, which is the interpersonal communication, analyzed in Paccagnella's textbook. In particular way, Goffman's interaction techniques will be explained, whom has analyzed all the fundamental assumptions of a face-to-face meeting, the rules in which to be subjected, contextual constraint and kinds of "game".

On the basis of rep. n. 1758/2017, Prot. n. 303921 del 02/11/2017, lessons will be given by Mrs. Ilenia Girgenti, whom can be contacted by students at this following e-mail address: ileniag_92@hotmail.it. Mr. Lorenzo Migliorati is the course's coordinator and can be contacted through institution communication channels.

In particular way, students will have to investigate on the validity of the "strategic" choices made by the American sociologist in today's context where interactions have totally changed their nature due to internet, social network and mobile devices advent.
