Learning objectives

On completion of this course, students: – should know the geographical and demolinguistic status of Spanish and the essential aspects of the spread of this language in the world and in society; – should know the main grammatical and lexicographical works of the Spanish language and their fundamental characteristics; – should know the essential aspects of the phoneme / grapheme relationship, of the vocabulary and of the morphosyntactic structures of Spanish and will be able to apply them in the analysis of texts. Furthermore, B1 language level of competence in Spanish (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is also required.

Prerequisites and basic notions

“Saperi minimi” (“minimum knowledge”): Spanish A2.
Before taking the exam, it is mandatory to have a B1 (computerized test, written test and oral test) in Spanish.

Program

The module will offer an overview of the spread of the Spanish language and related issues; it will also provide the basic tools for analysing the main mechanisms of current Spanish, according to a contrastive (Italian/Spanish) approach.

Main topics:
– The Spanish-speaking world: expansion, geography and demolinguistics of Spanish;
– Linguistic tools: an introduction to Spanish dictionaries and grammars;
– Constituent elements of the Spanish language, with a contrastive approach to Italian: from minimum units to morphosyntax.
The teaching materials used during the course form an integral part of the examination programme for attending students. They will be made available on the course’s Moodle platform.
For those students who do not attend the lessons on a continuous basis, the preparation of the programme will be done through the bibliography for non-attending students and the teaching materials for non-attending students made available in Moodle.

COMPULSORY BIBLIOGRAPHY AND TEACHING MATERIAL FOR SITTING THE FINAL EXAM
- STUDENTS WHO ATTEND LECTURES:

Bibliography

Visualizza la bibliografia con Leganto, strumento che il Sistema Bibliotecario mette a disposizione per recuperare i testi in programma d'esame in modo semplice e innovativo.

Didactic methods

Classroom lectures. Activities and exercises will be proposed during some lectures.
N.B.: there is one syllabus for attending students (min. 75% attendance) and one for non-attending students.
Methods of teaching support:
Guidelines and teaching materials will be uploaded in the Moodle platform of the module. In addition, a specific tutoring service will be activated for the module of “Lingua spagnola 1” (details will be explained in class and on the Moodle platform). Moreover, the lecturer is available during his office hours, which can also be arranged via ZOOM if necessary.
Finally, specific support and tutoring activities are available for inclusion and accessibility, with particular regard to the Language and Literature courses in the French, English, Russian, Spanish and German areas. More information will be available on the Department's webpage.

Learning assessment procedures

A 60-minute test will be administered in Spanish, but as it is the 1st year exam, students may answer in Italian. It will consist of ‘open-ended’ questions, short-answer and multiple-choice questions and exercises. Some questions will require metalinguistic reflection and the ability to identify linguistic phenomena, as well as to propose examples of the same.
Subjects to be tested:
(a) For students who attend the lectures continuously, the test will focus on the aspects covered during the course, the teaching materials, and the bibliography for attending students.
b) For all others, the test will focus on the bibliography and teaching materials for non-attending students (see also Moodle platform).
All students, and in particular non-attending students, are invited to submit their doubts to the lecturers during office hours.
Erasmus students should contact the coordinator of the module at the beginning of the course for clarification.
Language proficiency required:
It is required to possess, by the date of the examination, a language competence of level B1 or higher, corresponding to 3 of the 9 CFUs of the teaching.
Verification of linguistic competence is based on the certificates issued by the CLA (Centro Linguistico di Ateneo) or the Instituto Cervantes (subject to the CLA's equivalence being included in the appropriate lists) and is preparatory to the exam of Spanish Language 1.
As indicated in the “Vademecum normativo per gli studenti dell'Area di Lingue e Letterature Straniere”, the validity of the B1 language certificate is three years from the date of attainment.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

Breadth and depth of knowledge gained on the topics in the syllabus; language property and terminological precision; ability to connect acquired knowledge in a systemic form.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final mark in thirtieths will be obtained from the arithmetic mean between the mark in the written test, which must in any case be equal to or higher than 18/30, and the language proficiency mark (converted into thirtieths according to the indications in the "Vademecum for students of Foreign Languages and Literature"). The results will be communicated to those enrolled in the test via the ESSE3 platform.
